Back in November I had delusions of grandeur concerning the possibility of doing the weekly challenges of the Sew Weekly. There was a week where the challenge was to make an apron, and I thought, "What an easy way to begin starting these projects!" Ha! This apron turned out to be almost as involved as a regular garment. Why, you ask? Because it's reversible. That's right, my friends, completely reversible.

This was actually a partial UFO. Over a year ago I had wanted to make an apron, and had found an adorable pattern. I then went to the fabric store and proceeded to find even more adorable fabric. I then packed it away into my office of doom, and forgot about it. During one of many attemtps to clean up the office of doom and possibly turn it into the office of sunshine and roses, I found the pattern and fabric among the stash and decided it was time to complete the uncompleted.

It took me a little over a week. The pattern itself was relatively straight forward with very little confusion in the instructions. I used quilting cotton and some fusible interfacing for the supplies and some thread from my stash. The nice thing about the pattern was a lot of straight lines, the tricky thing about the pattern was a lot of weird details you wouldn't expect to find, but make the apron itself quite charming. There's pockets and a ruffle on one side! And each pocket (four total, reversible remember?) is lovingly narrow stitched to the main fabric. Then the main fabric is narrow stitched because it's reversible so that it prevents super poofiness when you throw it in the wash. In fact, every part of this apron is narrow stitched. It was things like that which made it a bit ridiculous to sew, and completely caught me off guard with how long it took to sew the thing.

However, I love this apron. You might even be able to see some of the stains on it in the pictures that's how much it's being used right now. I use it for both cleaning and cooking. It's extremely flattering and feminine to wear so even if I'm in jeans and a tee-shirt or my comfy lounge clothes, I feel like a 50's housewife while wearing it. The best part is? If I'm in my nicer clothes throwing something together, I still look presentable but my clothes are protected. The fun part about wearing this apron is my husband absolutely loves coming home to me wearing this thing while I'm getting dinner together. I find it amusing and sweet all at the same time.
I need to make an apron, I constantly get splashed when doing the dishes :)
ReplyDeleteYour apron is super cute!
Thank you!
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely a lot more fun to wear one when it's flashy. After several oil splattering stains on my clothes, it was definitely time to make an apron.
